Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS)
The Institute of Space and Astronautical Science was established in 1981 as Japan's inter-university space-science research organization. It developed scientific spacecraft and solid-propellant launch vehicles, including the Sakigake and Suisei Halley missions, before becoming part of JAXA in 2003; ISAS continues as JAXA's space-science institute.
