Alan LaVern Bean, born on March 15, 1932, in Wheeler, Texas, was an American astronaut, naval officer, test pilot, aeronautical engineer, and painter. He graduated from the University of Texas in 1955 with a degree in aeronautical engineering. Bean was the lunar module pilot on Apollo 12 (November 14-22, 1969), becoming the fourth person to walk on the Moon. He and mission commander Charles Conrad, Jr., piloted the lunar module Intrepid to a pinpoint landing near the robotic U.S. spacecraft Surveyor 3. Bean was also commander of the Skylab 3 mission (July 28–September 25, 1973), during which he, Owen K. Garriott, and Jack Lousma spent 59 days in space. Bean logged 1,672 hours in space, including more than 10 hours of spacewalks. He retired from NASA in 1981 to devote his time to painting. Alan Bean passed away on May 26, 2018, in Houston, Texas.
