Georgy Timofeyevich Beregovoy, born on April 15, 1921, in Fedorivka, Ukraine, was a Soviet cosmonaut and fighter pilot. He commanded the Soyuz 3 space mission in 1968. From 1972 to 1987, he headed the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. Beregovoy flew some 185 combat sorties during World War II. He died during heart surgery on June 30, 1995.
