James Philip Bagian, born February 22, 1952, is an American physician, engineer, and former NASA astronaut of Armenian descent. Selected as a NASA astronaut in 1980, he flew on STS-29 and STS-40, logging over 337 hours in space. A graduate of Drexel University and Thomas Jefferson University, Bagian is a Colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. He is the Director of the Center for Healthcare Engineering and Patient Safety at the University of Michigan. Bagian is the only person of Armenian descent to have traveled to space.
