AFRL Kirtland Research Site, currently referred to in AFRL reporting as the Phillips Research Site, is an Air Force Research Laboratory center of excellence for military space science and technology, research and development, and advanced technology integration and demonstration. Its Space Vehicles Directorate supports communications, position, navigation and timing, missile warning, space domain awareness and space control; the Phillips Research Site includes the Space Vehicles and Directed Energy Directorates, with about 1,080 military members, civilians and on-site contractors reported in July 2025. The site’s research and test work covers spacecraft technology, space experiments, lasers, optics, high-power electromagnetics and advanced beam control.
