Alaska Satellite Facility

Alaska Satellite Facility (ASF) is an operational University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute research and satellite ground-support facility in Fairbanks, Alaska. Its main campus ground station operates satellite tracking and communications antennas, including NASA Near Space Network S/X-band assets, to acquire data and support communications with polar-orbiting Earth-observation spacecraft; ASF also processes and distributes synthetic-aperture-radar data as NASA’s SAR Distributed Active Archive Center. A fourth ASF antenna is at a separate monitored Fairbanks site. This is controlled research and communications infrastructure rather than a walk-in public attraction: ASF describes gated operations and hosted equipment, while its educational pages provide public context and a ground-station view.
