Apache Point Observatory

Apache Point Observatory (APO) is a research observatory in the Sacramento Mountains of southern New Mexico, managed by the Astrophysical Research Consortium. The site hosts four telescopes: the ARC 3.5-m, Sloan Foundation 2.5-m, New Mexico State University 1.0-m, and ARCSAT 0.5-m telescopes. Its grounds are open to the public during daylight hours, but the observatory buildings are not open for routine public visits; occasional public open houses may provide additional access. The official visit page notes that the nearby Sunspot Solar Observatory visitor center is temporarily closed as of early 2026, so check APO's visit information before travelling.
