Assy-Turgen Observatory
Academician Omarov Assy-Turgen Observatory is Fesenkov Astrophysical Institute’s high-mountain research observatory on the Assy-Turgen plateau, 2,750 metres above sea level and about 85 km east of Almaty. Observations began in 1981, and AZT-20—Kazakhstan’s largest telescope—entered regular operation in 2017. The site supports photometry, spectroscopy and transient follow-up with AZT-20, Zeiss-1000, RC-500 and WFOS instruments; high atmospheric transparency, low light pollution and low turbulence support observing.
