Baikonur is the world's first and largest operational spaceport, the launch site of Sputnik 1 and Yuri Gagarin's Vostok 1 and a continuing base for Soyuz-2 and Proton-M missions. It is in Kazakhstan and leased to Russia through 2050. Public entry is controlled rather than walk-in: Kazakhstan's Aerospace Committee directs visitors to authorized advance access and tour arrangements, while current launch-period programmes are organized by domestic operators. Kazakhstan's tourism ministry reports that a dedicated 400-seat launch-viewing point is now open as visitor infrastructure expands.
