Detroit Observatory

Detroit Observatory is the University of Michigan's restored nineteenth-century observatory on Central Campus, preserving the 1857 Fitz telescope, historic instruments, exhibitions and public history-of-science programmes. The current visitor schedule is Thursdays 12:00–17:00, Fridays 12:00–23:00 and selected Saturdays 12:00–17:00; admission is free, but Saturday dates, events and closure dates are controlled by the official calendar. Public offerings include exhibits, tours, talks, solar viewing and telescope observing; observing depends on weather, while the building remains open for exploration when conditions prevent telescope use. Use the Observatory Street entrance at 1398 E. Ann Street, Ann Arbor. Daytime parking near the observatory is extremely limited; visitors with accessibility concerns should contact staff, and Ann Arbor Transit Authority routes 4A and 32B plus U-M campus buses serve the area. Confirm the current event calendar, closure dates, parking and access guidance before travel.
