Griffith Observatory

Griffith Observatory is Los Angeles’s free civic astronomy center and Southern California’s gateway to the cosmos, combining public observing with hands-on exhibits, live Tesla Coil demonstrations, Samuel Oschin Planetarium shows, city and Hollywood Sign views, and astronomy education. Visitors can look through free public telescopes including the historic 12-inch Zeiss refractor. Admission to the Observatory is always free; Samuel Oschin Planetarium shows are ticketed, and daily programs and road conditions vary, so check the operator’s current calendar before travel. The operator currently lists hours Tuesday–Friday 12:00–22:00, Saturday–Sunday 10:00–22:00, and closure on Monday. Griffith Observatory is owned and operated as a public service by the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. Public transportation is encouraged; paid parking is required on-site during operating hours, with free parking downhill, and roads and parking can become busy. Accessibility includes elevators, ramps, accessible routes, restrooms, accessible parking and shuttle drop-off; historic areas with physical limitations have equivalent accessible viewing stations, and complimentary manual wheelchairs are available first-come, first-served with photo ID.
