The High Energy Stereoscopic System, or H.E.S.S., is an operating array of five imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes that studies very-high-energy gamma rays from cosmic accelerators. Its four original telescopes entered full operation in 2003, and the central 28-metre H.E.S.S. II telescope extended the array in 2012. The remote Farm Goellschau site is not open for walk-in access, but the collaboration currently arranges free advance-requested tours for school and university classes, individuals, and groups when operations permit. Guided visits can include the telescopes and control room; visitors must organize their own transport.
