Indian Astronomical Observatory

Indian Astronomical Observatory is the Indian Institute of Astrophysics' high-altitude research station above Hanle in Ladakh, using exceptionally dry, clear conditions for optical, infrared, submillimetre, millimetre, and gamma-ray astronomy. The observatory is also a current public destination with free guided sessions every day. Visits include a presentation and tour of the 2-metre Himalayan Chandra Telescope and a tour of the MACE gamma-ray facility. Advance registration and high-altitude health precautions apply; because it remains a working observatory, visitors cannot look through the research telescopes or remain on site after the published closing time.
