Minuteman Missile National Historic Site

Minuteman Missile National Historic Site preserves the Cold War Minuteman II missile field through three dispersed National Park Service sites along a 15-mile stretch of Interstate 90 in western South Dakota: the Visitor Center at 24545 Cottonwood Road near Philip, Launch Control Facility Delta-01 and the Delta-09 missile silo. The Visitor Center introduces the nuclear-deterrence story through exhibits, the 30-minute Beneath the Plains film, a bookstore and ranger guidance; the park has no entrance fee. Current NPS guidance lists summer Visitor Center hours as 08:00–16:00 daily and winter hours from September 7 through May 17 as Tuesday–Saturday 08:00–16:00, with Sunday/Monday and holiday closures; weather can affect operations. Delta-01 and Delta-09 are generally open Tuesday–Saturday 09:00–15:00, weather permitting. Visitors may walk to the Delta-01 gate and look through the fence, but entry into the launch-control compound and underground center requires a reserved 45-minute Recreation.gov tour limited to six people; the route uses the original elevator and all participants must be able to climb two 15-foot ladders unassisted in an emergency. Current Delta-01 tour pricing is $12 for adults age 16+ and $8 for youth ages 6–15. Delta-09 offers a self-guided visit to a glass enclosure above the missile, with a cell-phone audio tour; the public cannot enter the silo interior. The sites are exposed prairie facilities with separate access points near I-90 exits 131 and 116, so check current NPS operating, road and weather conditions before travel.
