National Soaring Museum

National Soaring Museum on Harris Hill outside Elmira, one of only two U.S. museums dedicated exclusively to motorless flight, preserves and presents the heritage of soaring. Harris Hill hosted the first U.S. national soaring contest in 1930 and 13 national contests through 1946, and the area became the first U.S. site selected for a World War II glider program and pilot training. The museum’s large glider and sailplane collection spans the late 1890s to the present and includes soaring memorabilia, photographs, trophies, archives, educational exhibits and the U.S. Soaring Hall of Fame. Its 37,132-square-foot facility includes an 8,000-square-foot Heritage Hangar and collections/archive spaces. Group tours require advance arrangements; public hours, admission and holiday closures follow current operator guidance, so verify before travel. The adjacent Harris Hill Soaring Corporation offers separate, weather-dependent sailplane rides; the museum does not operate that flight experience.
