Nobeyama Radio Observatory

Nobeyama Radio Observatory is the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan’s highland public radio-astronomy site, with the 45-metre radio telescope, six-antenna Nobeyama Millimeter Array and Nobeyama Radioheliograph supporting research on molecular clouds, star formation, galaxies and the Sun. Visitors can follow a free self-guided course with explanatory panels and reach the 45-metre telescope about 600 metres from reception, roughly a 10-minute walk. The site is open 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m., except December 29–January 3, during weather warnings, or outside visiting hours; guided tours cost a fee and require advance reservation. Free parking is available at the Village Observatory Parking Lot, including spaces for large buses, motorcycles and bicycles. The nearest station is Nobeyama on the JR Koumi Line; the observatory advises switching off mobile phones, Wi-Fi and other radio-emitting devices near antennas, and prohibits drones and smoking.
