North East Land Sea and Air Museums

North East Land Sea & Air Museums (NELSAM) occupies the former RAF Usworth and Sunderland Airport site in Tyne and Wear. Its aviation collection, formerly the North East Aircraft Museum, preserves whole airframes, aero engines, models, records and locally and nationally significant military and civilian exhibits, including the site’s RAF 607 Squadron history and the Avro Vulcan that became the first Vulcan in a private collection. The volunteer-run campus also adds military vehicles, a Second World War home-front street and the North East Electric Traction Trust’s trams and trolleybuses. The museum is open daily 10:00–16:00, with last admission one hour before closing. Current visitor information lists admission at £7.50 for adults, £4 for children ages 5–15 and concessions age 60+, £20 for a family ticket, and £0.50 for under-5s and carers; card payments are preferred but cash is accepted. Good Journey offers £1 off entry with a valid bus ticket or when arriving by bicycle or on foot. Disabled parking is available near the entrance, but most outdoor areas are grass and wheelchairs cannot board the aircraft; well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome. Bus 56 serves Newcastle and Sunderland, while routes 50/50a serve Durham and South Shields; use the Nissan offices stop and follow museum signs. Groups should arrange visits in advance.
