Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT) is a 530 × 30 metre cylindrical, steerable radio telescope installed on an 11-degree hillside near Ooty in 1969 and operating at about 326.5–327 MHz (92 cm). Designed and built by India’s National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA) and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, it remains an active research facility: current work includes interplanetary scintillation for solar and space-weather studies, pulsar observations, high-redshift neutral-hydrogen searches and transient radio sources, supported by upgraded digital electronics and a pulsar backend. NCRA identifies the Ooty Radio Astronomy Centre as its RAC Ooty base and welcomes organized school and college visitors by arrangement; this is an operating research site, so request access in advance and follow current operator safety and local travel guidance.
