Pulkovo Observatory

Pulkovo Observatory is a Russian Academy of Sciences astronomical research centre founded in 1839 on the Pulkovo Hills south of Saint Petersburg; its main building was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1990. The public visitor programme combines the Astronomical Museum’s history of Russian astronomy with astronomical and geodesic instruments, precision timekeeping instruments, telescope models and Struve-era equipment, plus guided access to a 26-inch refractor, central-tower telescope, Big Pulkovo Radio Telescope or Normal Astrograph. The current booking page says park entry is free, while museum and telescope access is guided-only and pre-booking is essential; English guided tours are offered for groups of fewer than 10. Astronomical Museum hours are listed as Monday–Friday 11:00–17:00; tours generally last 1.5–2 hours. Evening stargazing depends on clear weather, with a lecture and live astronomy-camera alternative when skies are cloudy. Accessible parking is available near the central gate; buses 90, 150, 155, 290, 301, 431, 403 and 449 stop near the observatory, and there are no catering facilities on site.
