Pulkovo Observatory

Pulkovo Observatory is a Russian Academy of Sciences astronomical research centre founded in 1839 on the Pulkovo Hills south of Saint Petersburg; its main building was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1990. The public visitor programme combines the Astronomical Museum’s history of Russian astronomy, with two halls currently open and displays of astronomical and geodesic instruments, precision timekeeping instruments, telescope models and Struve-era equipment, with guided access to a 26-inch refractor, central-tower telescope, Big Pulkovo Radio Telescope or Normal Astrograph observing. Park entry is free, but museum and telescope access is guided-only and pre-booking is essential; standard tours last 1.5 hours and advanced tours 2 hours. Published museum hours are Monday–Friday 11:00–17:00, guide fees are paid in cash, and buses 90, 150, 155, 290, 301, 431, 403 and 449 serve the site.
