Sobaeksan Optical Astronomy Observatory

Sobaeksan Optical Astronomy Observatory (SOAO), operated by the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI), is Korea’s first modern optical observatory. Established in 1978 at 1,378 metres on Yeonhwa Peak in the Sobaek Mountains, it operates a 61-centimetre telescope with a 2k CCD system for variable-star, exoplanet-transit, minor-planet, active-galactic-nucleus and gamma-ray-burst research, as well as student education. KASI reports public outreach opportunities for about 2,000 people and around 50 small groups each year. Daytime facility tours can include the 61-centimetre telescope and observation room; supported night observing can continue until midnight when weather permits. The education centre is available to pre-arranged groups and organisations, while vehicle access is restricted in Sobaek National Park, so visitors should plan to hike and confirm arrangements with KASI before travelling.
