Southern African Large Telescope

The Southern African Large Telescope is an operational optical observatory at the South African Astronomical Observatory Sutherland site. Its 11-metre segmented primary mirror feeds instruments used to study planets, stars, galaxies and the large-scale structure of the universe. The SAAO offers scheduled public day tours from the Sutherland Visitor Centre that explain the telescope and selected research facilities; advance booking, tour routes and any night or special access depend on the current operator programme. The remote site is also a public astronomy destination, but visitors should confirm transport, weather and access arrangements before travel.
