Spacecraft Assembly Facility

NASA's Spacecraft Assembly Facility (SAF), also known as JPL Building 179, is the active high-bay cleanroom where Jet Propulsion Laboratory engineers and technicians assemble and test robotic spacecraft and instruments. Built in 1961 for Ranger and Mariner work, the facility has housed landmark missions including Voyager, Galileo, Cassini, and generations of Mars rovers; JPL continues to present it as a working spacecraft-assembly destination in its 2026 public open-house programme. This is a controlled working facility, not a walk-in attraction: public viewing is through advance-reservation JPL tours, open houses, or special events, with security and route requirements that can change.
