Subaru Telescope

The Subaru Telescope is the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan’s 8.2-metre optical-infrared telescope near the summit of Maunakea, Hawaiʻi, at approximately 4,200 metres elevation. It provides wide-field imaging, spectroscopy, adaptive optics and infrared observations for studies ranging from exoplanets and star formation to distant galaxies, with open-use observing for approved research programmes. Official history records scientific first light in January 1999 and open-use observations beginning in 2000. The summit is a hazardous, controlled research site rather than a walk-in attraction: official visits require advance submission and approval, summit visitors must follow observatory guidance and acclimatize at Hale Pōhaku or the Maunakea Visitor Information Station, and conditions can force evacuation or dome closure. Check current visitor, road and safety requirements before travel.
