Sutherland Observatory is the South African Astronomical Observatory’s primary observing site in the Karoo, at about 1,800 metres above sea level, hosting SALT and numerous optical and infrared telescopes. Public access requires an online booking: day tours run Monday–Saturday at 10:30 and 14:30, while night tours run Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday with seasonal start times. Visitors meet guides at the Visitor Centre; other buildings and the dome road are off limits, and the research area is a no-lights zone. Check SAAO’s visitor page for current schedules, fees, weather, and accessibility.
