Texas Military Forces Museum

The Brigadier General John C. L. Scribner Texas Military Forces Museum in Building 6 at Camp Mabry, Austin, preserves the history of Texas militia and volunteer forces from 1823 through the Texas Army and Air National Guard and Texas State Guard today. Permanent galleries use uniforms, weapons, equipment, photographs, dioramas and full-scale environments, while outdoor displays add tanks, artillery, aircraft and military vehicles. The Texas Adjutant General’s Department undertook to establish the museum in 1986, and it opened to the public on November 14, 1992. Admission is free. Camp Mabry’s current visitor guidance requires civilian visitors to check in at the Visitor Control Center at the 35th Street Gate for screening and a pass; bring a REAL ID or U.S. passport, vehicle details and proof of insurance. The Visitor Control Center lists hours of Monday–Friday 07:00–15:00 and Saturday–Sunday 08:00–15:00, but access remains subject to security approval. Groups should coordinate at least five business days ahead, and the museum may close for severe weather or Texas Military Department direction.
