Wits Anglo American Digital Dome

Wits Anglo American Digital Dome, formerly the Wits Planetarium, is a university-operated, multidisciplinary digital planetarium, research and innovation facility at the University of the Witwatersrand’s East Campus in Johannesburg. Its high-resolution full-dome projection, surround sound and interactive programmes support public astronomy, science, arts and school education; the venue also has a reconfigurable seminar room for workshops and events. The operator lists public access Tuesday–Saturday by scheduled show, with Monday closed for internal work and Sunday closed; show times change, so consult the current schedule and book via Webtickets. School shows normally run Tuesday–Friday at 09:30, 11:00 and 12:30, and shows last about one hour. Regular-show prices listed by the operator are R75 for adults, R45 for children (under-5s are not permitted) and pensioners, and R30 per learner for school groups of 50 or more. Late entry is not allowed, minors must be accompanied by an adult, and food, drinks, photography and filming are not permitted inside the dome; photography without flash is permitted in the foyer. The facility is wheelchair accessible, but only the front seats accommodate wheelchair access because the auditorium has raked seating. Pedestrians enter Wits through the Senate House Visitors Centre and must show proof of identity; that centre is open 06:00–20:00 daily. Contact the Digital Dome at 011 717 1390 or info.digitaldome@wits.ac.za; show queries may also use 011 717 1399. Visitor address: Yale Road, East Campus, Johannesburg, Gauteng 2001, South Africa.
