Akatsuki
Akatsuki was JAXA's mission to investigate the dynamics, cloud structure, composition, lightning, airglow, and vertical structure of Venus's atmosphere. The mission recovered from a failed 2010 orbit-insertion attempt and began sustained observations after reaching an elliptical Venus orbit in December 2015.

- Akatsuki became Japan's first planetary orbiter beyond Earth and returned more than eight years of Venus atmospheric observations, including major results on planetary-scale waves and the maintenance of super-rotation. Communications were lost in late April 2024, and JAXA formally ended operations on September 18, 2025 after unsuccessful recovery work.
