Akatsuki

Akatsuki was JAXA's mission to investigate the dynamics, cloud structure, composition, lightning, airglow, and vertical structure of Venus's atmosphere. The mission recovered from a failed 2010 orbit-insertion attempt and began sustained observations after reaching an elliptical Venus orbit in December 2015.

Outcome
Akatsuki became Japan's first planetary orbiter beyond Earth and returned more than eight years of Venus atmospheric observations, including major results on planetary-scale waves and the maintenance of super-rotation. Communications were lost in late April 2024, and JAXA formally ended operations on September 18, 2025 after unsuccessful recovery work.
