- Ariel 1 was the first international satellite, built by NASA for a United Kingdom–United States scientific mission. It carried six UK experiments studying the ionosphere, solar radiation, cosmic rays, and related space-environment phenomena from Earth orbit.

- Ariel 1 reached orbit and returned useful measurements from its ionospheric, solar, and cosmic-ray experiments. Radiation from the July 1962 Starfish high-altitude nuclear test later impaired its solar panels; the satellite continued to return data intermittently until late 1964.
