Cervantes was Pedro Duque's short-duration ESA mission to the International Space Station in October 2003. Duque launched from Baikonur on Soyuz TMA-3 with the Expedition 8 transfer crew, reached the ISS two days later, and carried out a focused programme of ESA-sponsored science, education, and technology activities. He returned to Earth with the Expedition 7 crew aboard Soyuz TMA-2 on October 28, completing a roughly ten-day mission that gave Spain its first long stay aboard the station.
