ETS-VII / Kiku-7

ETS-VII was NASDA's two-spacecraft rendezvous, docking, and space-robotics demonstration. Hikoboshi acted as the chaser and robotic work platform, while Orihime served as a cooperative free-flying target. Automatic and remotely commanded flight experiments were complemented by ground-controlled robotic manipulation. ESA contributed experiments on interactive autonomy and vision-assisted control, and the ground-space link used NASA TDRS relay satellites to extend contact windows.

Description
ETS-VII was NASDA's two-spacecraft rendezvous, docking, and space-robotics demonstration. Hikoboshi acted as the chaser and robotic work platform, while Orihime served as a cooperative free-flying target. Automatic and remotely commanded flight experiments were complemented by ground-controlled robotic manipulation. ESA contributed experiments on interactive autonomy and vision-assisted control, and the ground-space link used NASA TDRS relay satellites to extend contact windows.
Destination
Low Earth orbit for cooperative rendezvous, docking, and ground-controlled space robotics experiments
End Date
2002-10-30
Outcome
The mission achieved its planned rendezvous, docking, and robotics objectives and completed experimental operations in December 1999. Extended monitoring assessed long-term spacecraft degradation. After attitude-control equipment failed in June 2002 and recovery proved impractical, NASDA sent the termination command on October 30, 2002. The results informed subsequent cargo-rendezvous and Japanese station-robotics development.
