Expedition 1 was the first long-duration resident mission aboard the International Space Station. William Shepherd, Yuri Gidzenko, and Sergei Krikalev launched aboard Soyuz TM-31 from Baikonur Site 1/5, docked with the ISS on November 2, 2000, and began continuous human occupation of the station. The crew activated and outfitted the early orbital complex, supported the arrival of major station elements, handed over to Expedition 2, and returned aboard Space Shuttle Discovery on STS-102.
