Expedition 4 was the fourth long-duration crew increment aboard the International Space Station. Yuri Onufrienko, Daniel Bursch, and Carl Walz launched aboard STS-108 in December 2001, became the resident station crew after handover from Expedition 3, and returned to Earth on STS-111 in June 2002. The crew expanded station operations, supported research in microgravity biology and physical science, maintained station systems, and worked with several visiting cargo and Shuttle assembly flights. During the increment, Onufrienko and Walz performed an Orlan EVA to relocate a Strela cargo crane and install an amateur-radio antenna, Onufrienko and Bursch performed a second Orlan EVA to install Zvezda thruster deflectors and other hardware, and Walz and Bursch completed a Quest-based EVA to prepare for the next station assembly mission. Their stay set a U.S. long-duration spaceflight record at the time for Bursch and Walz.
