Expedition 5

Expedition 5 was the fifth long-duration crew increment aboard the International Space Station. Valeri Korzun, Peggy Whitson, and Sergei Treshchyov launched on STS-111 in June 2002, took over station operations from Expedition 4, and remained aboard through the handover to Expedition 6. The crew supported research on plant growth, human adaptation, materials, and station operations while also photographing Earth for scientific and educational work. Expedition 5 included the first use of the Microgravity Science Glovebox after delivery by STS-111, logistics work with Progress vehicles, and visiting Shuttle assembly flights including STS-112 and STS-113. Korzun and Whitson performed an Orlan EVA on August 16 to install debris shields on Zvezda, and Korzun and Treshchyov performed a second EVA on August 26 to install external equipment, experiments, and amateur-radio hardware. The crew returned to Earth on STS-113 on December 7, 2002.
