Expedition 54 was a 2017-2018 International Space Station increment commanded by Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Misurkin. It began when Soyuz MS-05 undocked in December 2017, leaving Misurkin, Mark Vande Hei, and Joseph Acaba aboard from the Expedition 53 crew. Soyuz MS-07 then arrived with Anton Shkaplerov, Scott Tingle, and Norishige Kanai, bringing the station back to six residents. The expedition supported research in biology, materials science, optical fibers, combustion, human health, and station operations while also handling visiting vehicles such as SpaceX CRS-13 and Russian Progress cargo craft. Expedition 54 included three spacewalks: Vande Hei and Tingle replaced Canadarm2 latching end effector hardware, Misurkin and Shkaplerov worked on Russian communications hardware, and Vande Hei and Kanai moved latching end effector hardware for the robotic arm. The increment ended when Soyuz MS-06 undocked with Misurkin, Vande Hei, and Acaba, handing the station to Expedition 55.
