Description

Outcome
Successful. NASA's Scout X-4 placed FR-1 into a circular, near-polar Earth orbit on 6 December 1965, and the satellite functioned in orbit. The experiment continued far beyond its planned three-month lifetime: scientific measurements were pursued until equipment degradation in August 1968; the spacecraft then continued transmitting operational information until 1 March 1969. NASA reported at least 19 scientific publications from the cooperative VLF study.
