ISS Assembly Mission 1A/R launched Zarya, the U.S.-funded and Russian-built Functional Cargo Block and first component of the International Space Station. Proton-K vehicle 395-01 lifted off from Baikonur Site 81/23 on November 20, 1998. About nine minutes later Zarya reached orbit and began deploying its antennas and solar arrays, providing the early station with propulsion, power, communications, and attitude control.
