LAGEOS-2

LAGEOS-2 is the joint NASA–ASI laser-geodynamics mission launched on STS-52 in October 1992. Its passive reflector sphere complements LAGEOS-1 from a different orbital inclination. Ground-based ranging supports tectonic-motion and Earth-rotation measurements, reference-frame realization and tests of relativistic orbital effects.

Description
LAGEOS-2 is the joint NASA–ASI laser-geodynamics mission launched on STS-52 in October 1992. Its passive reflector sphere complements LAGEOS-1 from a different orbital inclination. Ground-based ranging supports tectonic-motion and Earth-rotation measurements, reference-frame realization and tests of relativistic orbital effects.
Destination
Nearly circular Earth orbit; perigee about 5620 km, inclination 52.64 degrees
Outcome
The two LAGEOS satellites provide complementary geometry for tracking-station and Earth-orientation solutions. LAGEOS-2 observations also contribute to studies of Earth’s gravity field and frame dragging together with other ranging satellites and gravity models.
