Mir EO-2 was the second resident expedition to Mir and the first crewed flight of the Soyuz TM spacecraft. Yuri Romanenko and Aleksandr Laveykin launched on Soyuz TM-2 from Baikonur Site 1/5 on February 5, 1987, docked with Mir on February 7, and reactivated the station after an uncrewed interval. Their work included station systems recovery, Progress cargo operations, scientific research, and the difficult arrival of the Kvant-1 module. Romanenko and Laveykin performed the first EVAs from Mir, including the April 1987 contingency EVA that helped clear the obstruction preventing Kvant-1 from fully docking. Laveykin returned early on Soyuz TM-2 with the Soyuz TM-3 visiting crew after medical concerns, while Aleksandr Pavlovich Aleksandrov stayed aboard as Romanenko's replacement flight engineer. Romanenko and Aleksandrov completed the expedition and returned on Soyuz TM-3 on December 29, 1987.
