Mir EO-5 was the fifth resident expedition to the Mir space station. Aleksandr Viktorenko and Aleksandr Serebrov launched on Soyuz TM-8 from Baikonur on September 5, 1989, docked with Mir on September 7, and operated the station until February 1990. The expedition received the Kvant-2 module, expanding Mir with a new airlock, life-support hardware, and scientific equipment. Viktorenko and Serebrov also carried out a demanding EVA program that tested Orlan-DMA spacesuits and Soviet cosmonaut maneuvering equipment while preparing the station for further assembly and operations.
