OPS-SAT experimental operations mission

OPS-SAT provided an in-orbit experiment service for new spacecraft operations and onboard processing. Its supervised experimental computer allowed external teams to test software, communications protocols, image processing and autonomous techniques. ESA flight controllers supported ground rehearsals and orbital execution, preserving recovery control through the spacecraft bus. The mission was funded by the General Support Technology Programme and led industrially by Graz University of Technology.

Destination
Low Earth orbit for supervised onboard software, communications and mission-control experiments
End Date
2024-05-22
Outcome
ESA reports that 134 teams from 26 countries executed more than 284 experiments. The final experiment ran on May 21, 2024, and final radio contact occurred at approximately 21:30 UTC on May 22 before atmospheric reentry. ESA describes the end as the night of May 22–23 in Central European Summer Time. OPS-SAT’s experimental service concept continued beyond the original spacecraft.
