Orion Ascent Abort-2

Orion Ascent Abort-2 was an uncrewed flight test of the launch abort system under demanding ascent conditions on July 2, 2019. A modified Peacekeeper booster launched a test crew module and fully functional abort system from Cape Canaveral's Space Launch Complex 46. At about six miles in altitude, the abort motor pulled the capsule away; attitude-control and jettison motors then reoriented and released it for descent.

Destination
Suborbital ascent-abort test over the Atlantic Ocean
End Date
2019-07-02
Outcome
Successfully demonstrated the escape sequence during high aerodynamic stress. The simplified test capsule carried no parachutes and was not intended for recovery; it descended into the Atlantic while ejecting twelve data recorders for collection and analysis. The approximately three-minute flight supplied evidence for Orion's crew escape system.
