PRISMA formation-flying demonstration

PRISMA was a Swedish-led two-spacecraft testbed for autonomous formation flying and rendezvous. The maneuverable Mango spacecraft approached and flew around the cooperative Tango target, comparing GPS, radio-frequency metrology, and optical navigation. Partners included DLR, CNES, and the Technical University of Denmark. Separate propulsion experiments tested green propellant and microthrusters. This mission is distinct from Italy’s later PRISMA hyperspectral-imaging satellite.

Destination
Low Earth orbit for cooperative formation-flying, relative-navigation, rendezvous, and propulsion experiments
Outcome
The flight program demonstrated autonomous formation and rendezvous operations and new sensor and actuator technologies. OHB Sweden’s retrospective reports mission completion in 2014; it does not specify an exact completion day. The spacecraft had first separated on August 11, 2010 after launching together and completing initial checkout.
