SeaWiFS / OrbView-2

SeaWiFS was NASA's ocean-color science program built around the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor carried by the commercial OrbView-2 spacecraft, originally called SeaStar. The instrument repeatedly mapped chlorophyll and other indicators of marine biology so researchers could study ocean productivity, phytoplankton, harmful algal blooms, and the ocean's role in the global carbon cycle.

Outcome
OrbView-2 reached its planned polar orbit and SeaWiFS began routine global observations on September 18, 1997. Designed for at least five years, the instrument produced a continuous ocean-biology record for more than thirteen years before ground stations lost communication on December 11, 2010; NASA formally concluded the mission in February 2011.
