- Japan's first scientific satellite, SHINSEI (MS-F2), launched on 1971-09-28 aboard M-4S-3 from Uchinoura. It observed the ionosphere, cosmic rays, and shortwave-band solar radio noise, returning scientific results through its 1973 operations.

- Partially successful. The electron-temperature probe was damaged immediately after exposure to space and one cosmic-ray Geiger counter malfunctioned, but all other instruments operated normally. The mission detected abnormal ionization around South America, and its solar-radio observations revealed the generation mechanism of shortwave-band solar-radio waves. Operations continued until June 1973.
