Skylab 1 was the mission that launched Skylab, the first United States space station, into orbit on May 14, 1973. Launched aboard the final Saturn V rocket, the station was a modified S-IVB stage that served as a solar observatory, a microgravity laboratory, and a home for three successive crews. However, during launch, the station's micrometeoroid shield and one of its main solar arrays were torn off, leaving the station overheated and underpowered. Despite the initial damage, the station was successfully repaired by the first crew (Skylab 2), proving that humans could perform complex maintenance tasks in space. Skylab operated for 24 weeks over three crewed missions, conducting over 2,000 hours of scientific and medical experiments before eventually re-entering the atmosphere in 1979.
