Soyuz 11 carried Georgy Dobrovolsky, Vladislav Volkov, and Viktor Patsayev to Salyut 1 in June 1971. Spacefacts lists launch from Baikonur Site 1/5 on June 6, docking with Salyut 1 on June 7, undocking on June 29, and landing later that day after 23 days, 18 hours, 21 minutes, and 43 seconds in flight. The crew became the first people to live aboard a space station. NASA describes their work aboard Salyut 1 as a record-setting mission with experiments in astrophysics, biology, Earth observation, technology, and the human response to weightlessness. During return, the Soyuz depressurized before reentry, killing all three crewmembers. The accident ended further Salyut 1 crewed visits and led to major Soyuz safety changes, including the later requirement for pressure suits during launch and landing.
