Soyuz T-5 launched Anatoli Berezovoy and Valentin Lebedev to Salyut 7 for the station's first resident expedition. The crew lifted off from Baikonur Site 1/5 on May 13, 1982 and docked with Salyut 7 the next day, beginning a long-duration activation and research mission aboard the new station. Berezovoy and Lebedev brought Salyut 7 into sustained service, received Progress cargo vehicles, supported scientific and medical investigations, and hosted two visiting Soyuz crews. Soyuz T-6 brought Vladimir Dzhanibekov, Aleksandr Ivanchenkov, and Jean-Loup Chretien in June, while Soyuz T-7 brought Leonid Popov, Aleksandr Serebrov, and Svetlana Savitskaya in August. On July 30, 1982, Berezovoy and Lebedev performed a 2 hour 33 minute EVA to install equipment and work with external experiments. After the Soyuz T-7 visit, the crews exchanged seat liners: Popov, Serebrov, and Savitskaya returned on Soyuz T-5 in August, while Berezovoy and Lebedev kept Soyuz T-7 as their return spacecraft and landed in December after 211 days in orbit.
