Soyuz TM-17 launched from Baikonur on July 1, 1993 with commander Vasili Tsibliyev, flight engineer Aleksandr Serebrov, and French research cosmonaut Jean-Pierre Haignere. The spacecraft docked with Mir on July 3, beginning the EO-14 resident expedition and the French-Russian Altair mission. Haignere carried out the short Altair research program and returned to Earth on Soyuz TM-16 on July 22. Tsibliyev and Serebrov remained aboard Mir for the long-duration expedition, conducting science, station maintenance, cargo operations, and five EVAs. Soyuz TM-17 landed in Kazakhstan on January 14, 1994 with Tsibliyev, Serebrov, and Valeri Polyakov, who had arrived later on Soyuz TM-18.
