Soyuz TMA-16 launched from Baikonur Site 1/5 on September 30, 2009 with Roscosmos commander Maksim Surayev, NASA astronaut Jeffrey Williams, and Canadian spaceflight participant Guy Laliberté. The spacecraft docked with the International Space Station on October 2, bringing Surayev and Williams into Expedition 21 and Expedition 22 operations while Laliberté carried out a short-duration private spaceflight mission connected with Space Adventures and ONE DROP. Laliberté returned to Earth on Soyuz TMA-14 on October 11, 2009; Soyuz TMA-16 stayed at the station and landed on March 18, 2010 with Surayev and Williams.
