Space Reactor-1 Freedom

Space Reactor-1 Freedom is a planned NASA interplanetary pathfinder intended to demonstrate fission power and nuclear electric propulsion in deep space. NASA targets a December 2028 launch within the Mars transfer window and a 2029 Mars flyby, where the spacecraft is planned to deploy SkyFall, a payload of three helicopters evolved from Ingenuity, for science and exploration-zone reconnaissance. The mission is a NASA and United States Department of Energy partnership and is intended to establish flight heritage, launch precedent, and industrial capability for future space-fission systems.
